On those rare occasions I watch our local evening news, I’m treated to a commercial that tells me abortion is the primary issue facing Delaware and that Donald Trump is a threat that can only be countered by electing New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer as governor. But it’s not Meyer’s commercial - it’s from an entity that bills itself as Change Can’t Wait PAC.
So I was curious about that entity, and looked them up on the internet. All I found was a page with a contact form, a big yellow “donate” button, and this message:
Together we believe we can shape public opinion and mobilize support to make Delaware more competitive, increase the quality of essential services and opportunities available to those who may feel they are falling behind, left out and let down.
In too many ways Delaware has fallen behind and isn’t as strong as we’d like. We want a state government that values innovation and care when using our tax dollars. We want a state that leads our region and our country in overall economic affordability. housing availability, protection from crime, health care delivery, quality public education, quality child care that fits within our household budgets, compassionate elder care, and proactive environmental protection. We want a state which treats every Delawarean with respect and provides for personal freedoms, including the freedom to express our own sexuality and reproductive rights.
Join us. Don’t sit back and be silent. We can do better. Change Can’t Wait. Contribute, share your ideas and contact your leaders. Together we can build a strong grassroots public voice to establish Delaware as the state where we can all thrive and grow.
Usually with these entities you can find some sort of page where they’ll tell you about the coalition that supports them, but in this case they don’t. So I decided to dig a bit into just who believed change can’t wait in Delaware. Hey, they’re right about Delaware needing change but it has to be the right change and theirs ain’t it.
It wasn’t hard to find this PAC on the state’s campaign finance page, with its reports indicating they commenced operations in 2021. A few dozen sizeable donations later, they were in business. But the problem is, while they had a reasonable account balance in the $200,000 range by the start of 2024, the campaign finance laws don’t require a report until 30 days before the primary, which is about two weeks from now. So we don’t know where they’re getting the contributions to put these annoying commercials on, because producing and buying air time for those commercials will surely eat up that 200 grand pretty quickly.
In looking at the record, I found there are quite a few who have contributed to Meyer previously among the big-money donors, but I think the reason this PAC is so popular is that they can work around the donation limits for individual offices. While they can only hand Meyer a $600 check, they can donate $10,000 - or more - to this PAC and achieve much more.
So I suspect I’m going to be treated to another month or more of these and other commercials to tell First Staters that murdering babies is on the chopping block, even though (sadly) nothing could be further from the truth.
Until next time, remember you can Buy Me a Coffee since I have a page there.
Way too much sneakiness and deceit going on coming from all directions.
